Meet
eet The BDM
Pure Retirement
The Intermediary speaks with Tash Phillips, South East and London
business development manager (BDM) at Pure Retirement
How and why did you
become a BDM?
I started my career on a six month
contract at a lifetime mortgage
lender within the customer contact
centre, where I worked directly with
end customers.
Very quickly, I fell in love with
the product, and more importantly,
the positive impact it could have on
people’s lives. Seeing that impact
first-hand was incredibly powerful
and has stayed with me throughout
my career.
At that point, I initially thought I
wanted to move into management,
but an opportunity arose for a
telephone account manager role
within the sales team.
I saw this as a great chance
to experience a different side of
the business and gain a deeper

understanding of the adviser journey.
From there, I progressed through
various roles within the sales team,
supporting advisers in different
capacities.
What I really enjoyed was the
business development element
– helping advisers grow their
businesses while knowing that this
support ultimately led to better
outcomes for clients.
It felt full circle from the
customers I’d spoken to at the very
start of my career. I also love the
variety the role brings – no two days
are the same and there’s always an
opportunity to add real value.
What brought you to
Pure Retirement?
I spent around 10 years at my original
firm and, while I gained invaluable
experience, I reached a point where
I was ready for a new challenge.
I wanted to remain within the
industry I was passionate about, but
broaden my experience by working
for a different, well-regarded lender,
meeting new people and continuing
to develop my career.
Pure Retirement had always been
spoken about very positively by
advisers, particularly as a lender
that genuinely puts clients first. It’s
well known across the industry for
its honesty and integrity, and the
culture was something I had long
admired from the outside.
I was specifically looking for a
people-orientated organisation
that truly cared about both client
outcomes and its employees,
and Pure aligned perfectly with
those values.
That combination ultimately
prompted the move.
