REVIEW
JAECOO 8 SHS P
That strong paper performance
translates into the right kind of road
manners, too. The Jaecoo 8 does
not come across as a sporty SUV in
the conventional sense. It majors on
smoothness and easy pace rather
than trying to disguise its size with
artificial sharpness.
The power delivery suits the car
well. There is enough shove to make
it feel genuinely brisk, but the overall
impression is of a plug-in hybrid built
around calm progress rather than drama.
That is exactly what a large fleet SUV
should be.
No one really wants a seven-seater
that constantly reminds you how heavy
or complicated it is. What matters is
that it moves cleanly and quietly, and the
Jaecoo appears set up to do exactly that.
The electric side of the story
strengthens the case further. Battery
capacity is 34.46kWh and the official EV
only range is up to 83 miles.
For a plug-in hybrid of this size, that
means the Jaecoo 8 should be capable
of covering a large amount of daily
commuting or local business mileage
without using petrol at all. Official CO2
emissions are just 14g per km, which
gives it the kind of company car tax
profile that makes a large SUV much
easier to justify.
Jaecoo also quotes a total range of
more than 700 miles from a full tank
and a full charge, which reinforces the
sense that this is a car designed to cover
distance without becoming inconvenient.
DC charging up to 70kW allows a 30%
to 80% top up in around 20 minutes,
while AC charging from empty to full
takes about 5.5 hours.
That will not trouble a dedicated EV
for charging speed, but it is more than
adequate for a plug-in hybrid expected
to be charged at home or at work and
then used with minimal fuss.
Vehicle to Load capability of 6.6kW
adds another layer of flexibility for
anyone likely to use it for camping,
events or outdoor work.
On the road
The Jaecoo 8 seems to have adopted the
priorities that matter most in this class.
The emphasis is on composure, comfort →
