INTERVIEW
EASEE
Easee has an established presence in
other countries in Europe, how is the
UK expansion going?
The second is a more recent
introduction into the market, which
is called the Measuring Instruments
Directive (MID) certification. This is all
about ensuring the accuracy of charging,
and that's particularly important for
commercial and fleets.
You have to be able to bill accurately
for the energy that's being used, so
you need really, really good metering,
because if you don't and it's 0.5% or
1% out, across a fleet of thousands of
vehicles that really adds up.
It will either increase the electricity bills
of the operator or the fleet operator, or it
will mean that the user is short-changed
when they go back and charge their
vehicles at home, perhaps.
That accurate metering piece,
supported by the MID certification, is
really important, so our latest chargers
offer that.
Easee was established in Norway in 2018,
and it was not long after that that we
launched in the UK, in 2021. This was one
of the first markets outside of Norway
that we entered. The UK was and is one
of the fastest growing electric vehicle
(EV) markets in the region. We've got
quite a progressive energy sector that is
very interested in new technologies and
solutions that can help stabilise the grid.
We've got a very old and ageing
grid here, as do many countries, but I
believe that policymakers and energy
companies are working pretty well
together to try and find and implement
solutions that can relieve some of the
pressure. Smart chargers can modulate
excess demand during times of peak
usage or peak demand on the grid. It's
invisible to the end user, but aggregated
over a large number of chargers, it has
a massive positive impact on the grid
and its capacity. Easee has managed
to build a quite a strong position in the
UK, with a very strong team. We've got
some great partnerships with electrical
wholesalers like CEF, giants in the
industry, but also with energy companies
like Scottish Power.
At the same time, we’re building really
good networks and relationships with
the installer community, which is a key
part of this economy. We have excellent
installer networks in the UK. I wish we
had more of them sometimes, but they
are great, and they really advocate
for our products. The UK is one of our
strongest and fastest growing markets,
and last year we won a hat-trick of
awards for our home charging solution –
we have a good reputation here.
The UK market is a great example
of how we've tapped into different
segments that need charging solutions.
How has Easee been navigating
the changing regulatory landscape
in the UK?
We tend to evaluate regulatory
requirements and compliance quite
early in the development cycle, because
it is quite a complex and fragmented
landscape across the European Union →
